Quick concept of Slayde+cloak/downtown Cenrea for episode one. Not really sure why I put the fire in, but that's fine, it looks cool enough.
I like the way how this technique turns out, as its a color over semi-grayscale start point... I suppose I could post the process as well, if I can figure out how to easily do that.
The image reduction for this page is pretty fail, click on original for a better view.

Artdump 02 for this month, mostly just ideas for Episode 1. I am getting less fond of the grayscale rendering technique that I have been practicing before. What I used on my next piece I was much more satisfied with.
Need some more space so this fits on the page better.

2nd part of art-dump of recent junk/concepts for episode 1
Messed around with a couple different techniques for this one, not particularly what I had envisioned, but I guess it was a good start.

One of many character conceptuals to come for my "hopefully upcoming" graphic novel plans. I learned a lot on this image... hopefully I'll keep figuring out good stuff as I go along.
Minimal color here, it was really for just planning out the character outfit than any kind of scene. Playing with color combination will probably come soon, although I expect the armor to be a gunmetal/blue glows in the novel scenes.
Larger image available through the link at the bottom... there's a lot of detail in there.

Another piece done for the WARP team.
This is a Brother-Captain of the Black Templars paying homage to his fallen commander.
Edit: Looks like I have some changes to make... good ones though.
Dec 13th Edit 2: Image updated with some extra texture and different lighting.

A new emblem for my super awesome Legion in Aion.
Hope they like it... and I hope I don't have a breakdown when I try and make it work on the cloak!
It would probably do well on a dark background... maybe black, THAT sure is going to be fun.

My compiled spec piece for a dual-disc Nine-Inch-Nails album.
Still pretty happy with this piece, its one of the few I like from my graduation portfolio.

Doing some concepts of scenes I have bouncing around in my head for my graphic novel.
Rewriting all the history has opened up some new areas to explore, that's for sure. I'm trying to keep these at an hour, but it is rarely working, heh.

A piece I did for my Grandma for Christmas.
Need to get it printed and framed before the actual day though.
By Michael - Posted on December 3rd, 2009

I didn't actually do this one on 1202, but I figure it can serve for today since it was the same technique.
Slayde about to slice through some unassuming faceless guard... or something like that.

Daily sketch for 113009
Gonna try and do at least one a day to work on this technique, because I'm fairly certain it just requires a bit of practice.
This image lacks contrast... I'll have to be more mindful of that in the next. There also wasn't much thought behind this, to be honest, heh. I'll make sure to actually think about the content for the next one too.

An emblem for our cloaks in Aion, maybe when we feel like spending 15k again, I can change the color of the VB. Initially it was going to go on black, but it was later decided that white would be better. The silvery/gray stood out great on black, that's for sure; I don't much care for it on white though.
Been doing the mad dash to level up, but more art will come soon... I know my fits with gaming are pretty cyclical with my art fits.

Here we see a Black Templar battle brother meeting with a tribal from a recruiting world; a tribal warrior eager to begin the grueling and nigh-fatal process of becoming a Space Marine. This may be a loading screen in an upcoming mod for Fallout3 featuring a load of 40k stuff!
On creation: Sloppy line art, refined line art (not really that fond of this step, might just skip it next time, like I did with the previous Slade pic), flat coloring with dull lighting, painting on top of everything.
By Michael - Posted on August 24th, 2009

Mostly just a stab at a different way of doing color, actually turned out pretty well.
I really need to do a pic for my grandma next...
Creation: Super loose line drawing, slapped some sloppy color behind that, new layer on top painting.
Yes he has white hair, I'm angling something new for Galefire Magi... and how they are treated in the world. I also gave him a shave, since I didn't want to give him a white beard. MOAR SCARS!
By Michael - Posted on August 23rd, 2009
Have had a shitty month.
Lost a pet, feel pretty terrible about it, not exactly in the mood to be creative. Getting back into the Galefire groove now, hopefully post some art soon.
By Michael - Posted on August 8th, 2009

So, I might be helping a fallout 3 mod team with a 40k mod, and this is just something quick I whipped up to get the ideas going.
Enjoy!

My Grey Knight infantry force. I'll post the vehicles and my Red Hunters when I get them finished.
Hopefully soon!
By Michael - Posted on August 1st, 2009

My leader, Brother Captain Daedalus, and his retinue of Terminator armored Grey Knights.
The Brother Captain Stern model is pretty awesome.
By Michael - Posted on August 1st, 2009

The other squad of PAGKs, I think some of them in here are painted a bit better... but man I painted those Justicars a while back.
By Michael - Posted on August 1st, 2009

My first PAGK squad, I'd say I've come a long way painting since some of these.
The paint on this front Justicar just looks... not so amazing.

As the bloody grip of chaos closes around St. Martez, only Brother Captain Daedalus' Grey Knights have a chance to strike at the heart of the enemy, and with the forces of the Red Hunters Space Marines Chapter, the Reaver Titan Maximus, and Inquisitor Lord Akuna's Baneblade, Hammer of Daemons, leading an enormous Inquisitorial strike force, the fate of the entire sub-sector may well hang upon their victory.
Onto the non-fluffy part, this image took quite a while, but I wanted to get it posted before I go out of town. I'll be switching it up with something else next time, as I think the St. Martez battle has run its course... that is unless I want to do some sequential storytelling of it.
Also, there is a lot of detail you might not even see unless you look at the original link :)
By Michael - Posted on June 25th, 2009

Part 2 of the purge of St.Martez, with a closer look at some of the major players in the engagement.
Inquisitor Slade is accompanied by members of his retinue and the Grey Knight squad Purgator, led by Brother-Captain Daedalus.
This may or may not be a prototype for characters appearing in some sort of graphical storytelling within the 40k universe.

By Michael - Posted on June 19th, 2009

The force of Grey Knights and Grey Knight Titans are victorious over the daemonic forces that had infested St. Martez for 250 years, banishing them back to the warp for 1000.
I made this to refine my rendering technique, I think it turned out pretty well. I should actually take a picture of my 40k army to go along with it :)
A larger version is available through the "original" link

This is a freebie I did for a prospective client. I think it turned out pretty cool, but I think for my next piece I am going to get into Painter again and see how grayscale rendering goes in it, to see if I can get a more painterly feel on my brush strokes.
By Michael - Posted on June 9th, 2009

A conceptual of one of my characters, Janus, Guardian of Jutai.
Hopefully first pages of the actual novel will start coming soon! Still trying to get the script finalized.
By Michael - Posted on June 6th, 2009

Did this quickly for a friend.
It was a good time to experiment with my grayscale rendering techniques, since I am slightly modifying the way I approach the pieces. I think it turned out pretty well... although I'm still not sure if this is the right character!
By Michael - Posted on June 4th, 2009

My tribute to Samus, since her new game is obviously going to be amazing.
I think it turned out pretty well, I'll do an "on creation" when it isn't time for sleep.
By Michael - Posted on June 3rd, 2009
I linked two of the artists that are my models for not being terrible on the right, if you haven't ever heard of them or seen their art, you should go look.
E3 is going on, and I am tremendously excited for several of the games coming out (OMG METROID FROM TEAM NINJA?!).
Games I'm excited about:
Halo3:ODST
Metroid
Mario Galaxy
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Assassin's Creed 2
Sidescroller XBLA game from Epic/Chair
Brutal Legend
I'll add more later
I have a game picture to post here soon, hopefully tonite... we'll see if I have time to finish it up. It is a picture of samus, since I got so excited about the new game. Next I will probably do Master Chief, since Halo:ODST is coming out soon. I am going to try and make a habit of doing different characters for my quick rendering/color comps, since doing a lot of different characters is better than only doing my own all the time :)
I also probably have some commissions rolling in, so I should be posting some knightly coolness here soon. Also, I promised a pretty pony to my woman, so I guess I'll post that at some point as well.
By Michael - Posted on June 1st, 2009
Putting this up was probably long overdue.
If you have had any desire to contact me, here it is (I know tons of you have, right?). Also details are within on commissions (which I would love to do for YOU). My email is listed like that to hide it from spiders, my other email already gets way to inundated with crap to have another one getting loaded up. Hopefully the spiders haven't figure out how to read it when its written all clever like that.

So I've been busily working on a script for the first episode of my Galefire graphic novel, or whatever you want to call it, and I am finishing up. Hopefully I can have it finished in the next few days so I can have some friends and associates look it over, then I can actually start concepting out the panels. I've written 45 panels so far, and it will be presented in a 'cinematic' look, which basically means each panel will be a wide, page width box, and there will likely be 4 per page... I'm not really a big fan of the massively cluttered pages. I will probably throw a couple splash (full page) panels in there as well, but we'll see.
Went to an all day concert on Saturday, so I didn't particularly get much done this weekend other than writing. Hopefully I will have some info come back on some freelance work this week, otherwise it will be more writing and probably concepting out some more characters and locations.
