What is the Galefire?

“Galefire is an unending storm that rages beneath our sight.  It is power, it is control, it is life and death; it is everything to those who can wield it.  However, those who understand must be careful not to have the Galefire wield them…”

The Arbiter

Greetings, I am Junior Conciliator Mikael, personal scribe to the Arbiter.  The Arbiter has requested I compile his notes, agent field reports, and speculation into this document.  It will be a reference to all of his agents when dealing with the nether realm we call the Galefire.

Galefire – A definition

Galefire is power.  It is power to those who can tap its ethereal currents and bend it to their will.  It is a metaphysical realm of pure energy that exists parallel with our own, and those who can tap this tide of raw power are many, but few understand its danger.  For in the Galefire are beings, beings who chew and gnaw at the edges of reality, they threaten to spill forth in a never ending tide of darkness from the Galefire to consume the physical world.  Humanity is unaware of them, save a few, but they are drawn to us like a moth to flame, especially those who can touch Galefire but lack control.

The origins of the Galefire are unknown.  The Arbiter speculates it has always been, and always shall be, for it is a part of the material realm just as the material realm is a part of it.  If only the beasts that inhabit the Galefire could be purged, then the Galefire could become so much more to humanity, perhaps leading us to a new golden age of Majik.

Inhabitants of Galefire

Daemons.  Their titles are innumerable, but alien, invader, foreigner, and others do not capture their essence so clearly.  Daemon.  Their sustenance is souls, terror, anguish, pleasure, slaughter, fury; the gamut of emotions feeds these beasts.  It is unknown if there are “good” daemons living within Galefire, but it is surmised that these daemons are either unaware of the physical realm, or have simply been devoured by the daemons that plague humanity.

They are indeed a plague.  Knowledge of daemons, and in essence, the knowledge of Galefire itself is a closely guarded secret, barred from the common man.  Those who can harness the Galefire, but are unaware of the dread powers that lurk within it, make the finest targets for daemons who wish to feast upon the material realm.  Those practitioners feel the horrific tendrils of the daemon upon their minds only moments before they become a host, a vessel for the daemon to use at their leisure.

It is for this reason the Arbiter created an arm of his organization specifically to hunt down and destroy the daemon.  The Hunters.

The Hunters

The Hunters are the Arbiter’s own elite force of warriors who track down and destroy the daemon in its myriad of forms.  The Arbiter’s most powerful Adjudicator, Grandmaster Slade, has overseen the Daemon Hunters for four years since the Harbinger Levithuun relinquished the position.  The Arbiter and the Hunters have formed many alliances with the other nations of Astaar (save for the Sects), usually forming secretive groups that also hunt the daemon within their own territories.  These groups will call upon the Arbiter when a foe is too great; the Hunters are then dispatched.

Of all the Arbiter’s forces, the Hunters reign as the greatest, both due to their unflinching loyalty and devotion to the Arbiter’s cause, their training in the hands of the Arbiter himself, and their stunningly powerful equipment.  When combating the plague of humanity, only the best is acceptable.

Harnessing the Galefire – Majik

Majik is the weaving of the Galefire into a desired result.  Harnessing and weaving the Galefire comes in many forms, be they sheer force of will, complex memorization of spells, shamanic and totemic rituals, Runicism, and many others.  Regardless of the method, the result is the same: the power of Galefire crosses the barrier between realms and explodes through the caster, sometimes literally.

Great care must be taken when harnessing the Galefire, for daemons are everywhere, forever seeking a conduit to leap into the physical realm.  Once in the physical realm, daemons have been known to horrifically alter their hosts in the span of minutes to terrible monstrosities capable of limitless destruction, while other more subtle daemons begin to use their influence through the host for any number of vile ends.

Many Magi utilize Runicism to minimize the risks of daemonic interference.  However this method is extremely time consuming and requires a masterful knowledge of Runewords and their creation.  Master Runesmiths are very few and far between, for the linking and density of Rune Structures on the object govern the quality of the Majik effect.  However, once created, a rune inscribed item can be used for the same effect again and again if it retains a charge.  The original Runesmith is the only individual capable of recharging the item, for only they have the knowledge of the intricately woven patterns that must hold the roiling powers of Galefire.

This document will continue to be updated as I compile more field reports and the Arbiter’s speculations.
